pH Probe Study

What is a pH Probe Study?

A pH study is done to test for GERD (Gastroesophageal Reflux Disease). People who have GERD tend to have an excessive about of stomach acid that comes back up from the stomach into the esophagus (The tube that food travels down to get to the stomach). The pH probe study measures the amount of acid in your esophagus over a 24-hour period. The study is downloaded and reviewed by Dr. Strobel on the day you return with your pH monitoring equipment and diary. Dr. Strobel can go over the results on that day if you wish

What can I expect to happen during study?

We ask you not to eat or drink 1 hour prior to the study. This helps decrease the chance that food or liquid will come up into your airway during tube placement. A pH probe study is done by placing a very small tube into your nose. This tube is passed to your esophagus. It is taped in place with a small amount of tape that will go under your nose and up your cheek to hold the tube in place. The tube stays in place for 24 hours after placement. You will have a box that is attached to the tube that records the amount of time that acid comes into contact with your esophagus. This is being recorded within the box that you are carrying. You also will have a diary. You need to record beginning and end of meals or snacks. It is best if you can eat as “normal” as possible while the pH probe is in place to give us the most accurate study. You will also record beginning and end of any “laying down” time. There are other columns to record the time of any symptoms experienced during the test. (ie: abdominal pain, nausea, chest pain, vomiting, coughing, etc.) You will be allowed to be with your child during this procedure if you wish. Children are not sedated for the placement of this tube as it is small and takes only a few minutes to place and secure.

What do I do if the probe comes out?

If the probe come out before the offices closes, It can often be replaced by one of the nurses in the office. Please call office at (865) 522-4116 ASAP. If the tube comes out after office hours or during the evening then please record on diary the time that probe came out. We will still download the study the next day in our office.
